Throughout the last weekend of the year’s shortest month, Maryland high school playoffs got underway with the first round of the regional bracket being played Friday and Saturday. 22 of Baltimore County’s 24 boys basketball teams played. Here’s how each game played out:

BCPS 1A: The county went three teams into the 1A North I region, with Loch Raven at three, Pikesville at four, and Western Tech at seven. The Raiders narrowly edged out the Joppatowne Mariners with a 71-69 final score. The game was close for the majority of the first half, with Loch Raven taking a 29-26 lead into halftime. After taking a five-point lead into the fourth, the Mariners began to come back. With 2.1 seconds remaining, the game was tied at 65, senior Shynard Lewis hit from the mid-post to nail down his team’s 67-65 win!

In the regional semifinals, Loch Raven will host the seven seed Western Tech, after the Wolverines pulled off a road upset in Harford County. Western traveled to Harford Tech to take on the Cobras. After finishing the regular season .500, Harford Tech fell to the one-win Wolverines with a final score of 45-39. Pikesville, on the other hand, was the only 1A team to lose their quarterfinal game, as the four seed fell at home to the Havre de Grace Warriors 59-53.

BCPS 2A: In the 2A classification, Baltimore County is led by Hereford and Eastern Tech, who rank No. 1 in North I and No. 2 in North II. The only North I quarterfinal game was the fourth-seeded Lansdowne Vikings taking on the No. 5 Randallstown Rams. The region’s bottom teams played a hard-fought game, but the Lansdowne took it by two with a 43-41 final, as they’ll move on to face the Bulls. In the North II, Sparrows Point went in as the fifth-seeded team, and secured the first round upset, defeating Carver VoTech 67-43. They’re set to travel to Dunbar to take on the 11-3 Poets. Meanwhile, GW Carver went in as the region’s six seed, and fell to Forest Park 69-32.

BCPS 3A: County teams hold four of seven spots in the North I region and three of six in North II. Of the four, Overlea held the #1 seed overall and will play Aberdeen after the bye. The Eagles from Aberdeen defeated the fifth seed Towson Generals 55-50, while another Harford County team, the third seeded Edgewood Rams beat Patapsco by 50. The only game a BCPS team won in this region was the two seed Milford Mill Millers, who blew out Bel Air with a 75-21 final.

In the other 3A region with BCPS representation, New Town held the bye as the two seed. They are set to host the three-seeded Catonsville Comets, after they took down Centennial 77-52 at home. Additionally, the Franklin Indians entered as the fourth seed, and they took down the Howard Lions by two points in a 48-46 final. They’ll travel to Marriotts Ridge to face the top-seeded Mustangs in the semifinals.

BCPS 4A: All six teams that play in the 4A class play in the North I region. Dulaney and Perry Hall hold the top two seeds and both earned first round byes. Despite just seven regular season wins and entering as the bottom seed in the region, Woodlawn held Parkville to just a two-point win, with a 71-69 final. Now, the Knights will play their third game of the season against the Gators, in search of as many wins. The fourth-seeded Kenwood Bluebirds and fifth-seeded Dundalk Owls also faced off, with Kenwood winning a four-point game. This will be the first match between the two since Valentine’s Day of 2025, where the Lions won 59-47.

Basketball playoffs are underway in Maryland, as the first round of the regional playoffs were played over the weekend. 21 of Baltimore County’s 24 teams took part in the competition spread across each of the four classifications. Here’s how each team performed in the regional quarterfinals:

BCPS 1A: Just three teams competed in the 1A class, with the two-seed Pikesville Panthers, four-seed Loch Raven Raiders, and six-seed Western Tech Wolverines playing in the North I bracket. Of the three, Pikesville was the lone victor, as the five-time reigning 1A state champion clobbered the Joppatowne Mariners with a 73-10 final score. Loch Raven faced the Harford Tech Cobras at home, but fell to the five seed 49-39. Finally, the Wolverines traveled to Havre de Grace, also in Harford County, to take on the three-seeded Warriors, but lost 60-23. Pikesville will play Havre de Grace at home on Tuesday in the semifinals.

BCPS 2A: Starting with the North I region, Baltimore County represented 60% of the teams, including Hereford, who had a bye as the three seed, while Lansdowne and Randallstown battled as the four and five seeds. In the end, it was the Vikings who secured the home win with a 41-28 final. They will travel to Manchester Valley to take on the top-seeded Mavericks, while Winters Mill is set to host the Bulls. Eastern Tech and Sparrows Point are both in the North II bracket, and the Mavericks are set to host their semifinal game with both teams receiving first-round byes.

BCPS 3A: Two of four teams playing in the North I region had immense success in the quarterfinals! The Towson Generals, who entered as the two seed, cruised by the Aberdeen Eagles in a 52-18 final, while the Milford Mill Millers blew out the Overlea Falcons in a 69-12 final. Additionally, the fifth-seeded Patapsco Patriots faced the Bel Air Bobcats on the road in round one, but fell 49-39. The semifinal match between the 18-1 Generals and 17-2 Millers is shaping up to be one of the best of the season in both BCPS and the state. Stay tuned to CSZ for a game recap next week.

BCPS also sent three teams to compete in the North II region, the highest seed of which was the Catonsville Comets, who earned a free pass to the semifinals with their 12-6 regular season record. Additionally, New Town earned a three seed while the Franklin Indians went in at four. New Town narrowly scraped by the sixth-seed, the Centennial Eagles, with a 44-41 final, while Franklin fell to Marriotts Ridge at home 55-45. The Titans will now travel south to face Catonsville in the semifinals

BCPS 4A: Each of the six BCPS 4A teams competed in the North I region, with Perry Hall, the county runner-up, and Dulaney receiving first round byes. In the 3v6 match, the Dundalk Owls held Woodlawn to just nine total points, winning by 40 and setting them up for a road match against Dulaney. Kenwood hosted the Parkville Knights in the other match from this bracket, and the Bluebirds squeaked out a 31-28 victory, sending them to the swamp to face Perry Hall.
