In Hereford’s game against Sparrows Point last Tuesday, Bulls’ center fielder Daniel Metz made history, hitting four home runs and powering his squad to a 13-7 win.
The history-making game came after the midpoint in a season that saw a significant change to Metz’s career. “I’m hitting lead off this season so I’ve had to change my approach… I’ve hit third in the past. Now I have to get on any way possible,” he said. The change in approach has seen significant benefits this season, highlighted by a .140 boost to his batting average this season compared to last, and an almost .600 jump in OPS.
Metz got his start on the diamond almost a decade ago. Growing up as a big Orioles fan, and as the son of Scott Metz, who played in college at John Carroll and Franklin and Marshall, Metz found that baseball has always been his calling. From age nine to twelve, he played for Hereford’s club team, serving as his first taste of playing. Since then, Metz has played a season for Motley Crew during the COVID pandemic, along with time on the Blue Chips and US Elite squads since.
In his freshman year as a Bull, Metz recalled significant changes from his time playing travel to the expectations of a team like Hereford. “[Hereford] was a big change, especially such a strong program like it is… I had to develop an arm care routine, throwing every day instead of just two to three times weekly with club,” he said. Metz also pointed out the difference in coaching from club to high school. “Club coaches coach two or three teams and can’t focus on each player. Having [high school] coaches is a lot nicer for each player.”
After his junior year, Daniel found himself in the audience of the XPosure All Star game last spring where his brother and teammate Kreis Metz was on the field at Harford Community College. After the game, both Kreis and Daniel found themselves talking to head coach Josh Houser, and after a tour of the school and facilities, Coach Houser, who was initially interested in Kreis, made an offer to both to play for the Fighting Owls.
In August of 2025, both of the two committed to play baseball at Harford CC, and having a commitment out of the way helped ease Daniel’s nerves going into his senior season. “I came back slower because I didn’t have time to get swings in over the offseason because of basketball, but it was definitely easier not having the pressure going in with my commitment out of the way,” Daniel explained.
After moving from the three-hole to the leadoff spot in the lineup, Metz worked on becoming a contact hitter, and going into the game against Sparrows, had performed very strong in that category. But in the first inning, after sending the third pitch he saw over the center field wall, Metz knew that game would be different. “Going into the game I felt normal, but after the first [home run], I felt like I couldn’t do anything but hit a home run.”
Four home runs and seven innings later, the Bulls beat the Pointers 13-7. Now with two weeks left in their regular season, the 12-1 Bulls will look to win their first county championship since Metz joined the team. As an individual, Daniel will look for at least one more long ball this season, which would tie the school record, held by Kreis from the 2024 season.
