GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 🏀

Last week, the Baltimore Sun published a story, highlighting rapidly dropping participation rates in high school girls’ basketball throughout the state. Our feature story this week is an investigation, with the help of multiple BCPS coaches, into why this phenomenon is taking place. Click the link below to read more about the findings!

Last week, the Generals’ undefeated streak was broken at the hands of the Franklin Indians in a 43-32 home loss, but Towson remains half of a game ahead of the 15-1 Pikesville Panthers. With no school on Monday, the season has been extended to February 23, making up for multiple missed games in the last few weeks. BOYS’ BASKETBALL 🏀

Dulaney and Overlea remain above all others in BCPS, separated by just half of a game. This week, though, New Town surged into the top three! The next few days will feature multiple top tier games in the county, highlighted by Overlea traveling to Kenwood and Hereford hosting Milford Mill, with both games happening on Tuesday. CHEERLEADING 📣

Last week, Howard Community College hosted the regional cheerleading competition, where 13 BCPS teams competed! In the end, five will be advancing to states! Sparrows Point will represent the 1A class after scoring 107.9 and winning the regional championship. Eastern Tech is tied with Kent Island for the 2A state title with a 111.3 score, while Hereford will also advance in seventh place. In 3A, the Franklin Indians hold the bronze medal spot with a 109.5, and in the highest division, Perry Hall sits just 0.05 points behind the bronze medal spot, with a serious chance to bring home a medal. The MPSSC State Cheerleading Competition takes place this Wednesday!

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD 🏃

Next week, MPSSAA will host the Indoor Track and Field state championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, with 1A and 4A teams competing Tuesday afternoon, while 2A and 3A squads will race on Wednesday. Stay tuned next week for a breakdown on all the gold medalists from the sport’s final event!
